I guess I would ask for a clarification that feminist *scholars* continue to be charicatures of themselves. I know several women and men who consider themselves feminists who are looking for nothing more than equality before the law, and many more who are looking for some sort of redistribution or leveling, but aren't arguing that hunting equates with rape. Feminism has a radical fringe, just like any other ideology. It just so happens that the entirety of feminist academia resides in that radical fringe.
I think you will find that a great many things that we believe in depends on one's point of view.
I don't know that I've ever met someone who would actively label themselves as a *feminist* who was looking for actual equality. But that's just me. If more women of that persuasion were out there, we'd hear alot more carping from feminists about this teacher in Florida who is doing no jail time after raping her student.
I do agree however, that the ivory tower fringe of feminism tends to be even more extreme.
Did you actually quote Obi Wan Kenobi in your argument? I hope the chapter fines you a round of beers for that at the next meeting.
They may be more extreme, but the logic lying behind their theories is no less ridiculous. The word "feminism" itself implies looking at the world through a specific prism and from ONLY a specific viewpoint, which is in and of itself limiting and by definition un-scientific. They have already come to their conclusion before testing their hypothesis - that rape imagry and female persecution is everywhere - and with a faith to rival any religion thus find their "proof" wherever they look.
Give me 15 minutes of any movie and some point-of-view specific agenda, and I can "back up" my pet theory ten times over. But to be fair, that's only because I'm a white man who's trying to keep women, minorities, and furry animals oppressed.
The Michigan State University Department of Sociology - you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villiany. We must be cautious.
